The Smith chart application offers a comprehensive and interactive environment for RF and microwave engineers, with the added convenience of dark mode support. It facilitates the design of matching networks by allowing users to insert S-parameters, convert among different formats, or import data directly from Touchstone files.

Users can compute stability circles, as well as constant gain and noise circles, providing valuable insights into device performance. The interface is notably user-friendly, enabling seamless interaction with the Smith chart through dragging, zooming, and multiple chart management features, including naming conventions and plane switching.

The inclusion of tools such as a virtual ruler allows for rapid wavelength calculations toward the generator at any point on the chart, while tapping on the graphic reveals coordinate details in algebraic form—showing magnitude, phase, and impedance. Circles and segments can be manually inserted, resized, translated, or locked to prevent accidental adjustments. Custom circles and segments can also be defined precisely via text input, and all data can be exported as files, images, or PDFs for documentation purposes.

From an engineering perspective, the application supports sophisticated matching network design by selecting from various components like inductors, capacitors, resistors, transmission lines, and stubs (shorted or open). Parasite parameters can be specified for each component, and transmission lines can be represented in Z0, K, or L-C formats with bidirectional conversion options. Tapping on components updates the impedance seen from the device’s perspective on the Smith chart.

The software permits the creation of both input and output matching networks with configurable terminations—either single-port devices or two-port devices with selectable termination parameters. Supported component cascades are unlimited in series or parallel arrangements. Users can specify operating frequencies and spans to tailor the impedance calculations and visualizations accordingly.

Device analysis features enable insertion of network parameters (S, Z, Y, h), performance specifications (gain G a/G p/G t/NF), noise figures, and reflection coefficients at input/output ports. The tool provides real-time computations displayed directly on the chart and in associated fields—covering stability circles, gain and noise circles (including multiple types), and reflection coefficients.

Additional capabilities include importing Touchstone files to visualize input impedances versus frequency and auto-renormalization of S-parameters for different characteristic impedances. The application supports detailed parameter conversions between S-parameters, impedance, admittance, and hybrid formats—enhancing versatility for complex RF circuit analysis.
